MDX Review The Acura MDX has become a leader in the luxury three-row crossover segment because of its excellent value. It offers a winning combination of versatile seven-passenger seating and impressive cargo capacity. Slotting above the two-row, five-passenger Acura RDX in the brand's product range, the front-wheel-drive MDX provides an accommodating interior and excellent driving dynamics for a vehicle of its size. While a growing number of crossovers offer full or mild hybrid powertrain options, the MDX doesn't. But it does offer a more powerful, enthusiast-oriented Type S that enhances the prestige of the entire lineup in the same way that a BMW M or Mercedes-AMG model does. The Type S Advance, which is the ultimate MDX, is a terrific all-around vehicle with impressive acceleration and handling prowess.

With output ranging from 290 horsepower in the standard engine to 355 hp in the MDX Type S, the Acura stacks up well against competition.

Top marks for safety from both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety mean this isn't just one of the most enjoyable three-row SUVs you can drive, it's also one of the safest.

The 2024 Acura MDX is available in six trim levels: Standard, Technology Package, A-Spec Package, Advance Package, Type S, and Type S Advance Package. Front-wheel drive is standard, and Acura's sophisticated, on-road-oriented SH-AWD all-wheel-drive system is available. The Advance is the most popular trim package, but the base Standard package is the best value.

Acura has stepped up its game with the current generation. Its aluminum- and wood-trimmed cabin is attractive and upscale without being over the top. A 12.3-inch digital instrumentation display lends a bold, modern touch. The standard panoramic moonroof gives the interior a bright, open feeling. Occupants in front and back have plenty of headroom and legroom. The removable middle seat in the second row enables easy access to the third row even when child seats occupy the outboard second-row seats. The under-floor cargo area behind the third row offers generous cargo space. It's twice as big as in the previous-generation MDX. The power tailgate with available hands-free access makes loading and unloading easier. The only potential downside is the tightness of the third-row seating area, an issue in virtually all three-row vehicles.

When it comes to cargo space, the MDX outdoes its Volvo XC90 and Mercedes-Benz GLE rivals. With 18.1 cubic feet behind the third row, the MDX can accommodate seven occupants and their luggage. With the rear seats folded, cargo space expands to a whopping 95 cubic feet, significantly more than in the XC90 (85.7 cubic feet) and GLE (74.9 cubic feet). 

The infotainment system in the 2024 Acura MDX boasts several advantages. Its high-definition 12.3-inch display has clear graphics and standard wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, as well as Alexa voice-command functionality. Passengers can use Amazon Alexa to accomplish a range of tasks, from navigation instructions to phone calls, finding podcasts, and more. Additionally, the system includes USB-C and USB-A charging ports and a wireless charging pad. The CabinControl feature, which can be accessed via a downloadable app, lets passengers use their smartphone to control audio, rear climate controls, navigation, and the panoramic moonroof's sunshade.

It hasn't tested the 2024 Acura MDX, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gave the nearly identical 2023 MDX its top five-star rating for overall crash protection. While it hasn't evaluated the 2024 model, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named the 2023 MDX as a Top Safety Pick+, its highest rating.

A range of deep, rich, monochromatic premium paint colors including Performance Red Pearl, Liquid Carbon Metallic, Majestic Black Pearl, Platinum White Pearl, Fathom Blue Pearl, Lunar Silver Metallic, Phantom Violet Pearl (available with Advance Package), Apex Blue Pearl, and the Type S exclusive Tiger Eye Pearl are available for drivers who demand a rich finish.
